One of the Lucky Ones

by Wondra Vanian

Saying goodbye is never easy–even less so when you know you’ll never see one other again.

Desmond watched through a grimy window as his father put an arm around his mother’s shoulders, the other raised in a half wave. With a lurch, the train pulled away from the nearly-empty platform, and he became again a child being sent off to school for the first time.

Except, of course, that his parents wouldn’t be there at the end of this day.

Smiles would not greet him to ask how his day had gone and maybe even buy him ice cream.

They wouldn’t be waiting because he wasn’t coming back.
